Making History: U19 Women record a win over U19 England

The U19 Wales team made history on the 10th August, beating the U19 England A team 5:4 at the Oxton Tournament, a round robin tournament.

The tournament comprised 7 teams Wales, Scotland, England A+B, Oxton, North Select and AIST an American touring team.  The Wales line up had many new faces so it was a great opportunity for the girls to gel as a team, try out new skills and tactics and see what they could achieve. After starting the day with a loss against a spirited Scotland team, Wales improved throughout the day.  Wales’s determination and constant improvement against tougher and more physical teams was noticeable.

Wales faced England A team only minutes after narrowly losing by a goal to England B.  Wales were motivated, they were the underdogs but they were a team hungry for a win and their play to follow reflected this.  With a 3-1 Wales half time score with the whole team playing outstanding, Wales had everything to play for. England brought it back quickly to 3-3 and then took the lead to 4-3. Wales again took control and after bringing the score back to 4-4 scored again in the last seconds of the game.  The final score was 5-4 to Wales.

This victory will hopefully act a a spring board for future success.  The U19 team is part of the Women's Performance and will be competing at the FIL Rathbones Women’s 2015 U19 Lacrosse World Championship, Edinburgh, Edinburgh.  The team will be selected from the Women's Academy squad who have already commenced their preparations. The squad is working hard to improve both individually and as a team under the guidance of head coach Porcella and her talented support team.
